A website devoted to development in the Toronto metropolitan area. Downtown Toronto is the fastest growing urban core in North America. Very fun website for fans of modern architecture and futuristic skyscrapers! http://urbantoronto.ca/

Toronto is a very exciting & dynamic city. There certainly are aspects of developing Toronto that Minneapolis could emulate.

According to skyscraper page they have 30 buildings proposed or under construction over 500 ft tall. That city is going to look VERY different in 5-10 years. Can we have just one!?

Yeah! We really only need a few more to make our skyline one of the most spectacular in North America! A 950 foot tower near the IDS and Wells Fargo to crown the skyline with a few 40-50 story towers spread out past our current tallest buildings. We are already a fortunate city to have our 3 tallest buildings be some of the best designed skyscrapers in the US over the last 40 years. A couple more and WOW!

Interesting, but this is also an issue that my parents have in their condo complex of one story detached townhomes in Ohio. And it happens where I live downtown. It really can be a problem with any building with very large windows. I absolutely agree this is a concern that needs to be addressed in Toronto.
There are no doubt problems or concerns that will emerge with Toronto's boom in high rises. But their metropolitan region does not have nearly the urban sprawl you see in US urban centers (which is an enormous environmental issue in this country). The point is for humans to be much more mindful that we share our world with many other life forms , and to design our built environment to reduce our negative impact as much as possible.

Something to keep in mind about Toronto is that until 1998 it was six seperate cities. Toronto currently has an area of 240 square miles, while Minneapolis is only around 50 square miles. I'd love if Minneapolis and St Paul were aggressively annexing inner ring suburbs by force, though I think that would cause a civil war if it started now.

And here's wikipedia explaining it. It wasn't really an annexation, but a forced amalgamation.

I'm going here for two days next week, what is a good neighborhood to stay in? Maybe like an uptown/NE/Loring type neighborhood? Any thoughts?

When I was there recently I stayed right a Yonge and Dundas, which is pretty much right in the middle of everything. You can easily walk south to the lakefront and financial district or north to Bay Street, not to mention everything around Yonge-Dundas Square, which is a very busy area.

That said, if you're looking for a more alternative place to stay that is outside of downtown, maybe somewhere in York?

I just found this article, which seems like it hits what you are looking for.

Toronto is the latest to hop on a much improved frequent transit grid. This network will have 10 minute headways or better from 6 am til 1 am, 7 days a week. It includes their subways and streetcars in addition to buses http://www.ttc.ca/News/2015/June/0615_10min-service.jsp

I put together an overlay of their network on the MSP metro area:

Yes, Toronto's neighborhoods are much denser for a much larger area, with a more rigid, walkable grid extending further than our suburbs allowed. But still, it would be nice to see this level of systemic investment here.
