What? What's not to like? The project has a great design, a grocery store, and it's infill.the closer this whole foods/apartment project gets to completion the less i like it. maybe it will be look better if anything ever happens on the barren wasteland that are the blocks surrouding the library.
Don't count on it being surrounded by something better.

Confused? Do you honestly think something better will be built near 222?

The half block facing Hennepin on the Dolphin Staffing block should, and most likely will be a much more impressive building. Especially if that park gets built. And the block just across 1st on Washington has a lot of potential as well.

That is the site for Velo which I think should be starting work this spring or summer. The half block facing Hennepin on the Dolphin Staffing block should, and most likely will be a much more impressive building. No Velo is going across 1st Ave from 222, go4guy is referring to the block Dolphin Staffing is on.That is the site for Velo which I think should be starting work this spring or summer. The half block facing Hennepin on the Dolphin Staffing block should, and most likely will be a much more impressive building. The Dolphin site is a great place for a condo tower. With 222 only 6 stories they can get the most bang for their buck with a nice high rise condo building. Possibly even dual towers.
Re: 222 & Whole Foods - (222 Hennepin Avenue)
That was the site for the cancelled "Eclipse" condo proposal ( from the mid 2000's) which called for two towers. I wonder if the developer of that project still owns the land and is sitting on it . I do think 222 across the street will increase its desirability to be developed. The Dolphin site is a great place for a condo tower. To be sure, are you talking about knocking down the Dolphin building or building on the open space around it?
Re: 222 & Whole Foods - (222 Hennepin Avenue)
Dolphin used to have a building on the cleared half block. No we are not talking the elevated buildung facing Washington. We are talking about building on the cleared half block. To be sure, are you talking about knocking down the Dolphin building or building on the open space around it?

The exterior on this is starting to go up on the 1st Ave side. I didn't get a great look at materials, but it looked like at least sme brick.
Re: 222 & Whole Foods - (222 Hennepin Avenue)
From what I saw yesterday it was some large scale red brick. I actually really like the scale of this building coming from the N. Loop into downtown it is really finishing the Washington Ave Corridor really nicely. I took a picture. I'll see if I can ensmall it enough to get it online. The exterior on this is starting to go up on the 1st Ave side. I didn't get a great look at materials, but it looked like at least sme brick.

It just fits nice, I'm not arguing that something taller wouldn't have been good too, but I don't think it's as regretable as some imply.
Re: 222 & Whole Foods - (222 Hennepin Avenue)
I've always thought the same thing, but since it is basically on the border of the North Loop and the taller buildings of the CBD I can understand that a taller building would have worked here too.
Re: 222 & Whole Foods - (222 Hennepin Avenue)
I walked by the 1st Ave side last Monday, and they are using a high quality red brick on the first level with a contrasting golden beige brick higher up by the apartment units. The windows are properly inset into the brick wall to give the building a sculptural and solid feel. At the the very base is a warm greyish beige stone. None of the modern metallic panel siding is visible yet, but I think it will create an interesting visual contrast when combined with the traditional looking brick. So far, much, much better looking than what you could see in the renderings. I think this project is going to end up being gorgeous. From what I saw yesterday it was some large scale red brick. I know a lot of people wanted something larger on this block, but I think the end result will be just fine. Most tall buildings have a way of standing out from the neighborhood rather than incorporating into it. What we need is better city life with walkable streets and store fronts - something that this projects offers.

I walked past their leasing office a couple of times on Friday and was surprised at the number of people in there inquiring about the units. Hopefully it's a sign that this thing will lease quickly.
(Nick - I like the half-car in your last photo, not quite sure what happened there...)

It was either an HDR or panorama shot - both of which are composed of multiple exposures and then merged into a single image. Moving object often get chopped up, duplicated or turn semi-transparent.
