I assume you are referring to Meisblock? Because if you are referring to Blackbird, you are crazy. Probably a little harsh for Meisblock. It's a little blocky but the design is meant to respect the Mies Van Der Rohe designed building next door. It's also a long and narrow site.

I suppose it depends on the final quality, etc, but the rendering just looks like a flat surface with metal panels.

If you look at the interior there are balconies that l span the length of the building. There will be 1st floor retail and possibly commercial above that. The rest will be luxury apartments.

I don't know much about architecture in Des Moines but if that building in the foreground of miesblock is a Mies Van der Rohe building, then it makes sense that is simple and clean, it's kind of boring, but not exactly ugly.

The blackbird I'm pretty jealous of, I'd take that over 365 Nicollet anytime.

Some good news for the Backbird Tower in Des Moines!
The City of Des Moines will contribute $4.2 million toward a 26-story high rise apartment building planned at the former Younkers site downtown.
Officials struck a preliminary agreement for incentive dollars with the developers, Blackbird Investments, who plan to begin work in November and open the tower to tenants in 2018.

Not quite Des Moines, but has anyone seen the renovation of Marshall, IA's 7 story Tallcorn Tower done by Commonbond Communities?

Two developers are battling over a downtown location.
Both Mandelbaum and Blackbird are trying to buy a city-owned parking garage at Fifth and Court avenues and replace it with a development that includes a residential tower standing at least 25 stories, a new parking garage, a hotel and other commercial development.
Mandelbaum Properties' $111 million proposal called The Fifth includes:
A 25- to 32-story tower with about 200 luxury apartment units and a 50-room boutique hotel.
A 564-stall parking garage along Fifth Avenue.
A two-story, nine-screen movie theater operated by Omaha-based Main Street Theaters that serves food, beer and wine.

Blackbird Investment's $137 million proposal called Four-22 proposal includes:
A residential co-op standing 26 to 35 stories.
A 700-stall, six-story parking garage along Fifth Avenue covered by a lighted art installation that moves with the wind.
A 150-room hotel facing Court Avenue with an indoor/outdoor music venue on the street level.

If #2 wins out, I can think of a couple other Upper Midwestern downtowns that a upscale movie theater would do well in.

If there's anything I miss about living in Iowa it's that crag rangoon pizza from Fong's in Des Moines. If there was a pizza joint up here in the Twin Cities that did crab rangoon pizza i'd be set.

New renderings for The Fifth by Mandelbaum. 39 stories, 452 feet tall. This would be Des Moines' and Iowa's third tallest.
