I don't love it. Modernist towers were built with plazas and not podiums intentionally, to emphasize the sheer, vertiginous thrust of the tower. Four stories of podium will make the tower feel very different from street level.

Yes. A windswept plaza emphasizing IDS Center would have been preferable to the Crystal Court.

They aren't even vaguely comparable. The Crystal Court was designed alongside the IDS tower, and the two are situated to maximize the vertical impact of the tower, which keeps a sheer wall on 8th and on the corner with Nicollet. This is like demolishing the Crystal Court and wrapping all four sides of the IDS with Mayo Clinic SquareYes. A windswept plaza emphasizing IDS Center would have been preferable to the Crystal Court.

I get what you're saying. I find zero value in trash like the unused plaza, blank walls, squat street level commercial and tourist bunker lobby. Other than on the windswept plaza the verticality of the tower isn't emphasized. This is a undoubtedly a huge net positive and better than any other realistic alternative. The building owner isn't springing for expensive improvements that don't improve the bottom line.

Holy moly! West Loop, particularly the "Fulton Market" area is undergoing a massive development boom. Right now, I'd describe the area to a Minneapolitan as North Loop x3 (+10 years), but if everything in that Curbed article gets built and development fills out the western half of the neighborhood, it'll be North Loop x10.
Urbanist confession: it's also super easy to drive and park in much of the neighborhood (at least during COVID when the offices were likely empty). We stayed 2 nights at the Hyatt House, which is sort of near the western edge of the more highly developed part of the West Loop, and street parking was readily available and free. No permit restrictions or hourly restrictions at all on side streets.
