Video Games
Re: Video Games
Remember how long it took sc4 to even become playable though. And the years and years of modding that made it what it is now. Try playing a fresh mod free install (without rush hour) and tell me it still lives up to that glory.
I have faith that eventually it will become easier to separate the garbage mods from the good ones and all the features the game might be missing will be patched or modded in and it will basically become the modern heir to sc4's legacy. And for a cynic like me that's saying a lot.

If any of you like 3D platformers (like the old banjo games):

^Can't come soon enough!
Re: Video Games
I tried Cities:Skylines too. It's just kinda "meh" for me. I do feel like it was a slight waste of money... $30 isnt going to kill me, but I hardly consider it a true successor to SC4, even though it is certainly better than SC5.
There's something about my heavily-modded SC4 that I prefer. This game just doesn't get old and I'm happy I can finally run it again on my Mac.

Re: Video Games
So I gotta say, as an urbanist, I feel a little bit (like .1%) bad playing GTA5. Like, yeah, I love walkable human scale and bike infrastructure and think people shouldn't have to worry about random gun crime or being run over by a careless motorist. BUT FUCK YEAH I'VE GOT A TRUCK SCREW YOU ALL I GOT PLACES TO BE.
Re: Video Games
GTA 5 was an out-of-control amazing game. Have been thinking about doing a write up from a transportation standpoint. You can take trains! And drive on the subway tracks underground. The level of detail is just crazy on so many things. Spent like two hours trying to steal a fighter jet from the military base and ended up figuring out you could just parachute right into the hanger rather than barrel in guns blazing. Was worth it.

With PC the mods will just keep getting better. Imagine if we could get a real transportation mod on PC. You pay for fares to get on the train, map editing of bus routes and expanded subway routes. It'd be amazing!

Re: Video Games
Someone should do a streets blog about the urbanism of downtown Los Santos. Noticing some very good urban ideas while walking around it right now.
Re: Video Games
I've often noticed something similar about the places depicted in TV shows -- the street setting has to fit within the field of view of a camera, which usually means something fairly urban in layout. Buildings are often packed close together and have shallow setbacks even if they're supposed to be out in the suburbs. (And some suburbs really are laid out like that...)

Rest in peace.

Part of me wishes I never saw those videos just because I'm so impatient. If anyone gets wind of a beta release, do share.

Cities: Skylines and the After Dark DLC are on sale until tomorrow as part of Steam's Lunar New Year deal. You can grab them for a little under $20 total. And in a week the Snowfall DLC will drop. I'm interested to see why I would want trams when I've got buses (especially some of the articulated bus assets available) and subways, but okay. I'm more excited for the inclement weather, heating and snowplowing mechanics.
Also, the Workshop feed just shoved the Lowry Avenue Bridge to the top this morning. So that's a thing...

Re: Video Games
I've not heard good things about After Dark's value for the money. Is it worth 7.50?
