I googled shake shack southdale.
Page 3 in this mentions it with the Restoration Hardware development.

Okay good.....otherwise I was going to say a fast food chain is a terrible under-utilization of that space!

This article indicates Shake Shack would be a standalone 5,000 sf restaurant site in the NW quadrant of Southdale (SE corner of France & 66). There's an image included. Looks like a pretty terrible use of land. Not sure what Simon is thinking here...

Looks like one of those configurations where the back of the store faces the street.. nice.
Pretty sure this will be shot down by both the planing commission and city council.
Frankly an underwhelming proposal in comparison to how the other three corners turned out.

I think they actually had to spend time and effort to make it that bad.

That is utterly abysmal. I'm all for putting stuff on the edges but if you're going to do it do it right, get rid of a good chunk of the surface parking, re-route the loop road, then put in quality mixed-use development on the edges all around.

Did you notice the street frontage though?

What, that 100' switchback and berm along the lifeless France Ave sidewalk?

It is marginally better than it would be if it were centered by drive aisles on all four sides. That's about the only praise I can offer it.

The way it puts its backside to the street, yeah, the city will fight that, there is a lot of upset with how the shops near the Container Store put the lifeless side to France. I’m convinced the city won’t let anything that bad happen here at this important corner.

I want something at the corner, but the way this is situated I can see an argument that nothing is better.

If Simon insists it can’t get a higher better use of this land than this, I’d much rather have it backed up against the mall entrance off 66th. Fit it in the corner of this triangle at the upper right tip. Then maybe the triangle corner to the lower left might someday get something to squeeze in.

I dunno, this is just sad.

That's a good way to fill a corner.

Regarding turn islands at 66th / York
- NW corner removed
- looks like the three others will remain forever!

Envi Edina (old Bestbuy lot)
- Doran has resubmitted plans with minor changes

Estelle Edina
- developers Ryan Cos and Luigi Bernardi are exploring the idea of creating affordable-housing in type and quantity "greater than required" by the city's policy
- possible standalone 40-50 unit 3-4 story condo/apt building using $3-5M of Southdale TIF monies for land acquisition/construction costs
- another site plan rendering shows the developer buying out the entire block (Valley View on W, 69th on N, France on E, 70th on S, minus the new Vitamin store retail standalone) and building 48 total rowhouse townhomes in addition to the two towers

Is there a document with the Estelle site plans? Rowhouses along Valley View from 69th to 70th would be a good look.

SE corner also removed! SW is modified, although will remain. NE is the most hopeless given the very tight angle. I need to check out the new ramp design. Although it is more accessible to keep it at street level, rather than ramping up and down, I wonder if there's enough room to maneuver for a bike.

Estelle condo developers desire putting affordable units in a separate building than the tall towers.

I'm intrigued by what's happening to the awful ring road. Especially the France Ave access.
They did slightly improve its corner presence.
From reading the city document, I learned there are agreements with the mall tenants and partners that prevent developing this corner to its full zoned height potential of 12 stories. That's something for an investigative journalist to dig into and ask the city, "What would it take to get rid of that restriction?

Why would they agree to such a restriction for their tenants (who have one foot out the door) anyways?

If anything, tasty burgers, fries and milkshakes is a BIGGER distraction to potential shoppers like me who may be rolling up to Southdale, only to be lured by the promise of a food orgasm!
