Thrive MSP

Postby fehler » July 31st, 2012, 2:22 pm

So, the Met Council has a new site for 2040 planning, called "Thrive MSP". Post a idea, comment on them, vote on them, etc. Looks very cluttered, and it just started. http://yourideas.metrocouncil.org/

Article about it is at http://www.minnpost.com/cityscape/2012/ ... 99s-future

Interesting concept. I applaud the effort but wonder how much they will actually listen to the comments.

I don't know if I trust the general public I'm making planning decisions. I see a lot of people saying: "Too much traffic, build more highways!" or "Parking too hard, require more spaces!"

Reading through the comments, I think that it's much more likely to be skewed in the opposite direction -- urban-transportation super wonks recommending LRT and protected bike lanes on every street. I just don't see Joe Public spending a lot of time on the Thrive MSP site.

But what about Agenda 21™?!

Yeah, I spoke too soon. Most of the comments were pretty good, often criticizing useless rail projects out to the exurbs, while suggesting more focus on improving transportation in the core where it will actually be used and help reduce car dependence.

Interesting that the ones in the cities are during work hours while the rest are in the evening. Almost seems like the meetings are being set up to have a suburban bias...

Thread necromancy!

Thought it would be worth it to post this by Katherine Kersten, the Met Council is being a bully with its Thrive 2040 proposal. Would love to see a Strong Towns or Chuck Marohn counter point.

Suburban counties say Thrive ignores their needs:
The regional planning agency put together the plan as a way to set goals and allocate federal funds for highway and other transportation projects over the next 25 years.

But the strictly suburban counties — Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Scott and Washington — say their pleas haven’t been taken seriously. And as a result, they say, the plan focuses on transit and nonmotorized transportation without paying enough attention to highways and freight, which they count as their lifeblood.

“It seems like they don’t hear us,” said Carver County Board Chair Gayle Degler.

Oof. I stopped reading at "...Forbes.com columnist". At that point you can pretty much assume what the rest of the piece will be.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. Is this all around the recent move to make TAB allocations more equity-based? Because other than money flowing through the TAB (which is not really the Met Council anyway), Met Council doesn't allocate money to roads, AFAIK. Sewers and transit, yes, and I can understand why a Met Council more focused on sustainability would cause angst in the suburbs.

Edina's city manager tweeted that the city has already hit the Met Council Thrive 2040 population goal.

I'm just... I need to know why the numbers were so drastically reduced from the first draft to this if they were so easily hit for Edina decades early. WTF.
