It's also worth noting that there are several flat-out inaccuracies there. McGuire, for instance, WAS with Coleman when the author claims he was talking with Hennepin County.

Interesting nugget.

Joe Leyba @joeleyba
@IMSoccerNews Doesn't the option on the Royalston stadium location expire on August 31st?

Brian Quarstad retweeted Joe Leyba
I believe you are correct but the Pohlad brothers told me they are interested in that property w/or without stadium

Apologies if this has already been addressed... but why is the new Atlanta MLS team allowed to play in an NFL stadium?

Because MLS really wanted a team in Atlanta, and that was the proposal that was made to them? I'd conjecture that, had the Wilfs been the only proposal in Minneapolis, MLS would have been fine playing in the Vikings Stadium as well. But the MN United proposal was more attractive to them.

I also believe they prefer open air stadiums so that was an easier sell. Will it also have real grass?

I've read Mercedes-Benz Stadium will have artificial turf.

If there was a feasible path to a dedicated stadium in Atlanta it might have been a possibility. MLS needed another team in the Southeast and Atlanta has been continuously been beaten down by existing sports franchises when it comes to venues.

I really can't believe Mineapolis is going to mess this up.

Mess it up? Naw. We'd rather have it over here in Saint Paul!

Anecdotally, a lot of the comments from soccer fans do seem to prefer St. Paul. It's hard to say whether that's because they genuinely like Midway better or because they appreciate that St. Paul actually courted the team. Maybe both.

Also, to be sure, the team messed up the Minneapolis proposal too.

But how I saw it, the team offered a good proposal for an ugly part of downtown and immediately started conceding it's original (modest) demands. All the city had to do was engage and it could have gotten a pretty good deal. That location, cut off from downtown by two major stadiums and a huge parking ramp, was pretty ideal for a stadium. And that's not to mention that the MLS demographic tends to be younger and more urban and diverse than fans of other pro sports teams; in other words the type of people Minneapolis should be trying to attract.

Sigh.

I don't believe the Farmer's Market site is off the table after 8/31. The owner made a strange statement in Roper's recent article when he said if someone wants to make a "stupid offer" he'll sell. Is he taking a potshot at MN United ownership knowing that their offer will need to be higher after the deadline?

I heard or read a rumor that the Polhads are interested in buying the site whether it is for the stadium or their own development. Not sure how much faith I would put in that. But they sure could find better use for that site in the future if anyone could.

As I read somewhere else, there's also a reasonable chance that United (the developer) puts down the money regardless, since it could probably find a valuable use for the land even without a soccer stadium.

I think the St Paul site is actually a better place for the stadium. I wouldn't be surprised if it led to significant redevelopment along that part of University. Not everything has to be in downtown Minneapolis.

Option on soccer stadium site expires
*locked*
Difficulty swinging Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges in favor of the project and a smoother approval process in St. Paul suggest the stadium could end up elsewhere.
