At this point, hard to discern whether Sons of Norway will remain on the site in the existing building, or whether new office space will be constructed for them as part of the project.

This line from the F&C article makes it sound like it's the existing building:
Sons of Norway CEO Eivind Heiberg said in an interview Wednesday that the organization will continue to occupy about 18,000 square feet in the building. Goodwill Industries and Norway Art are the only other existing tenants. A Wells Fargo branch moved out in late 2016.

The MSP Biz Journal article indicates that the small apartment building directly south of the Sons of Norway building will remain:
The site includes a surface parking lot that can be developed. There’s a small apartment building directly behind the Sons of Norway building that the Sons don’t own.

“I think that’s a cool little building and we think it will stay in its current form because of how it fits conceptually with the whole area,” Barranco said.

On the other hand, Nick Halter seems to think it's getting knocked down: https://twitter.com/mspbjHalter/status/ ... 4500531200

So perhaps it's one building to the south of the condo along Holmes and another along Lake that wraps around to Humboldt?

This bear votes for the project to include a Himalayan mountain-climbing gym with a particular outreach to LGBTQ clientele: "Sons of Norgay". :D

To be geographically appropriate, maybe it should be a fjord climbing gym?

It's not super clear to me how much of this block this deal involves. In addition to the SoN building, is it the whole parking lot all the way down Holmes? The half block lot on Humboldt? Both?

I'm fully expecting acceptably mediocre. So pretty much the standard for a prime developable parcel in Minneapolis.

Really gotta believe Wells Fargo is willing to part with those two parcels for the right price. Their new building across Humboldt is so over-parked, it's not like they need the overflow.

Can we always include a general summary of articles for those of us who are out of views?

One of the things I had hoped for was that lunds would move into the ground floor of some larger development, opening up that massive space for redevelopment. It seems more and more unlikely, but I'm still holding out hope!

"Ryan Companies and Weidner Apartment Homes will purchase the building and its city block, on Lake Street between Holmes and Humboldt avenues, from the organization of descendants of Norwegian immigrants. They plan to demolish the building and redevelop the site, though plans are still forming."

...

"Sons of Norway will move back into the building when construction is completed and become an anchor tenant in time to celebrate the organization's 125th anniversary in 2020. The new headquarters will also serve as the office of the Honorary Consulate General of Norway in Minneapolis."

It would be nice to get something a little more noteworthy here than all the other similar looking buildings in the neighborhood.

There was a previous discussion about this site when it was first announced (maybe a mod could find that and move it into this thread). In that discussion, I think a number of people felt that there would be value in preserving the modernist building. The site is certainly large enough that a major redevelopment could occur and not require its demolition.
