Anchorage does need a lot of help in the creating a sense of place department.

I visited Anchorage a few years ago. One of the coolest things they have is a scale model of the solar system spread throughout the city. Also some great parks and some mountains close to the city.

They have two business districts (Downtown and Midtown) but both are full of parking lots and one-ways and could use a little love.
