A $150 million early 2015 project proposed for the 3M headquarters and article from the StarTribune.

No details on building specifics were given, however.
3M Headquarters - Maplewood
New 3M R&D Building - Maplewood
The first addition in a long time to an old-style suburban Fortune 500 HQ. Glad to see that they are investing in the state and their campus (although with incentives). The renders look decent, the whole campus is a bit of a hodge-podge of styles so this one will stick out and probably not be visible from the freeway as it is on the North end of the campus if I am correct. Every time I pass here, I see some of the buildings and picture a black and white film reminding us of "better living through chemistry"

Yep, it's been under construction. I've worked off-and-on at the 3M Campus -- It truly is a city unto itself! Earlier this year they finished up a complete renovation of their interior skyway and common spaces. It looks like the designer had inspiration from 2001: A Space Odyssey. If only they would extend these enhancements to the rest of the interiors!

I'm surprised no one has commented on this, but 3M is building a new 400,000 sq ft building on their St. Paul/Maplewood campus. Interesting that Maplewood had some paranoia about 3M moving -- where would they go? 3M has invested A LOT of money into their campus over the past few decades, and it really is quite impressive- a mini city.

Re: New 3M R&D lab building
3M has made a lot of noise about moving facilities (including R&D) to locations where its market is expanding.

I was actually going to snap a few pictures of this site today, but ended up going by too late and the sun was already down. It's going to be eye-catching for the campus.

This thread should be in the suburbs directory, no?
Re: New 3M R&D lab building
I debated about where to put it but their website lists their headquarters in St Paul. Pick up any 3M product, and it says it was developed in St Paul. And working at 3M I can tell you that every employee refers to the headquarters as being in Saint Paul. Plus, you can literally spit out the window and have the wad land in St Paul. Technically it is just barely in Maplewood, but not in the minds of people who work for 3M.
In a way 3M is its own city with skyway system, power plant, street grid, mall, etc. It is quite an impressive corporate campus.
At any rate, I doubt 3M leaves their headquarters. They've invested far too much money, time, and people in it over the decades. 3M isn't like some corporations that can more easily move their headquarters.

I'm well aware of all you say, but it is in Maplewood. Color me impressed if you can spit all the way across McKnight Road.
Re: New 3M R&D lab building
I love when I have a meeting in Building 220 (the 3M tower). You can see both downtowns and the Cathedral, all lined up at a slight angle. Would make for some great photos for those who have a nice camera.
Re: New 3M R&D lab building
How would I get in there with said nice camera?
Re: New 3M R&D lab building
3M is currently celebrating the opening of the new R&D Center (known to 3Mers as "Building 280"). Very impressive building! It's been fun watching the construction over the past couple years. I really like the building -- energy efficient, modern, attractive, and absolutely stuffed with 3M architectural (and other) products.
