Re: Ward 10
"Party types" are telling her to run. She probably means other old people.

Can't she just go away? I've had enough of those glasses
Re: Ward 10
Ha ha old people.
Re: Ward 10
While I'm super happy that [what I think is] a slightly more demographically representative person is doing well in candidate Lisa Bender, let's not get too carried away with bashing other people/voters. It doesn't always translate very well in writing when you look back at it.

Re: Ward 10
Yes, I think there's easily enough to criticize about Meg's policy positions or the way she interacted with the community. But after last weekend, even that's not as relevant as focusing on the future of Uptown.

You're right, and thanks to MNdible for calling me out on it in such a MNdible way. I can be pretty ageist, and I tend to forget that it really isn't that different than judging a person on any other demographic, which society tends to frown upon.
What I should have said was this:
"Party types" are telling her to run. She probably means the same group of people that have been supporting her all along.

From Meg's facebook page just now:
"What a beautiful morning for an announcement! Because I care deeply about this city, I will be continuing my campaign for re-election to bring consistency, inclusiveness and progressive leadership to the 10th Ward. Thank you for all the phone calls, emails and visits encouraging me to continue running."

Ah, the exact event I was waiting on until donating to Lisa Bender's campaign. I was really hoping Meg wouldn't run, just to save me the time and money I will invest in this race, but it will be oh-so-sweet to watch her crumble. I can't wait for the debates and inevitable snotty sound bytes from Meg. Now that this is official, Lisa is going to have to be a little tougher on Meg than she was in the endorsement contest. We're way beyond puppies and smilecakes at this point.

Tuthill wants to ban plastic bags:

While I enthusiastically support this proposal, the article raises a good/ amusing point about her having used to own a balloon shop.

This is the kind of thing that makes people roll their eyes at Minneapolis.
It brings to mind all of the time that was chewed up in the great Circus Animal Ban of '07.

Re: Ward 10
Yes, because only hippie communist states like Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda ban plastic bags.
If the backwards hayseed Minnesotans ever did any foreign travel that wasn't an all-inclusive stay in a chain hotel they wouldn't roll their eyes at what is a standard practice all over the world (admittedly it's more common to charge a fee for plastic bags I believe).

The environmental evidence that paper is better than plastic is very thin.
This is feel-good legislation that's going to have very little real impact on anything.

Re: Ward 10
I agree that both paper and plastic bags should be banned, so people are forced to use reusable bags. Not sure Joe Soucheray would agree with me. Or whose eyes did you think would be rolling?
Charging a fee for use of disposable bags would probably be a better compromise in a right-wing, suburban, anti-environmentalist city like Minneapolis, but Tuthill's focus is obviously on the aesthetic impact.

Tuthill will be gone soon enough anyway.
Re: Ward 10
Hi everyone. Medium (since around March)-time reader, first time poster. I support Lisa Bender but I wouldn't say that her victory is assured. Her opponent has some powerful backers as well as incumbency on her side, and it's hard to know what turnout on Nov. 5 will look like. Lisa's campaign always welcomes donations and volunteer door-knockers (I've done both). I think that donations made before Aug. 27 count in the Sep. 3 campaign finance report, which shouldn't be important but is. I speak only for myself, not the campaign, but I wanted to put this out there. Thanks for reading.Tuthill will be gone soon enough anyway.
Re: Ward 10
While I am not necessarily opposed to the ban this part bothers me:
She legislates based on the things that personally annoy her, focusing on her pet peeves rather than looking at the bigger picture. Her proposed patio ordinance was drawn from the same wellspring. That is a terrible way to run a government. I know her as a person and quite like her but I don't think she belongs on the city council. She is not as bad as some posters here think when it comes to urbanism but she is better suited for the neighborhood do-gooder role.Tuthill said she never liked plastic bags, expressing particular annoyance at their tendency to end up as "tree ornaments."

Don't count your chickens. She has strong support. Lisa Bender needs all the help she can get.Tuthill will be gone soon enough anyway.
Re: Ward 10
So if you were door knocking for Lisa, what would be your 30-second "elevator pitch," summarizing the who/what/why in a positive tone to someone who may be unfamiliar with City Council and urbanism and who, in fact, may disagree with Lisa on some specific issues (e.g. willingness to look at muni energy)? Asking for a friend.
